Many U.S. employers recognize at least 10 federal holidays (if not more). By updating your time clocks to automate paid holidays within your time keeping system, you can save additional payroll processing work. This also allows employees to easily view which holidays will be "celebrated" within the time and attendance system.
Many time and attendance software programs make it quick and easy to load all your paid holidays into the system at once. Get the work out of the way now so you can kick back and relax when those long holiday weekends roll around.
There is no minimum or maximum number of paid holidays company's may celebrate a year. Federal holidays (legal public holidays) are recognized by Congress but employers are not required to observe them.
Here is a list of legal public holidays:
- New Year's Day, January 1
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the third Monday in January (1/21/13)
- Washington's Birthday, the third Monday in February (2/18/13)
- Memorial Day, the last Monday in May (5/27/13)
- Independence Day, July 4
- Labor Day, the first Monday in September (9/2/13)
- Columbus Day, the second Monday in October (10/14/13)
- Veterans Day, November 11
- Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November (11/28/13)
- Christmas Day, December 25
Some companies/states celebrate unusual (or regional) holidays. Mardi Gras in Louisiana? Caesar Chavez Day in California? Does your company observe any unusual holidays?
